Pilot Writer Axed E-mail

Dawn Ostroff, the President of Entertainment at the CW has announced that Mark Schwan will not be developing the new Melrose Place remake after all.  She was very secretive about who the new writer may be, but that is only because negotiations are not yet complete with this mystery person.  Ostroff did reiterate the fact that the show will be based off of new twentysomething characters, but thinks that it is important to include original cast members as well as they did with 90210.

Hey, if they need some input, we here at MelrosePlace.tv have quite a few ideas of them.  Who knows, maybe they will take the ideas of Web 2.0 that made places like YouTube and Facebook a success and incorporate viewer’s ideas and opinions into the show.  TV networks have not traditionally done that much, but hey I am just some guy with a bunch going on in his brain.  What do I know? (You won’t know unless you ask.  Give me a call Dawn and let’s have a chat!)

It seems that all anyone is talking about is if Heather Locklear will be back on the new Melrose Place show.  I definitely think that she will be an asset to the show, but personally, I would rather see Thomas Calabro back as Dr. Michael Mancini and Jack Wagner as Dr. Peter Burns.  In any case though, we should look at it for what it is, what it was and what it will be.

First off, Melrose Place started as a show about some twentysomethings trying to find their way in the world.  Think back, they were bright eyed and bushy tailed and ready to face the world without inkling as to what it was really all about.  We were able to watch the young ones get their first real jobs, start businesses, find love, get married for the first (second, third and fourth) time.
Think of Billy, he went from being a happy optimist skating by through teaching dance lessons to a cynical and conservative widower.

That's what it was and what it is.

While I would love to see the whole cast back, save a couple of characters that I did not care for, the truth is, Melrose Place is a show about young people.  People in their 20's and early 30's, not their late 40's.

I think that Heather Locklear could make a good supporting character, but would seem out of place as a main character.  We may see a few cameos of the former characters, but to include them in the regular cast would make the new show something that it is not.

They have done a decent job with 90210 (although it is no Gossip Girl or OC), even including Rob Estes as and the story of their parents.  Even including Kelly as a counselor has worked out well, but bringing Brenda back and dragging that part of the story on has really seemed out of place and almost seems to be a desperate attempt to hold on to the past.

Please don't let them ruin Melrose Place.

Heather Locklear on the new Melrose E-mail

Aw snap!

Inside sources at E! Online has reported that Heather Locklear has been approached by the CW to take up her old role as Amanda Woodward in the new Melrose show.  Her agent has denied these rumors though.

It seems that auditions have already started and the cast announcements should be next month.  Some sources have reported that the characters will be more ”Culturally Diverse” than the original show.  That strikes me as kind of funny, since American's in general were strongly being force-fed a helping of multiculturalism throughout the 90's.  Of course this idea only presented itself as a black woman and a gay man on Melrose Place.  Rhonda, the black lady, was written off the show before the first season even ended and Matt, the gay guy, left a few seasons later.  I am not opposed to this or anything, but it just strikes me as a funny thing that many studios do the first season of a show and then move away from pretty quickly.

Anyway, I am sure that a lot of the rumors will clear up after the holidays when everyone is available to comment on the situation.

The last episode of Melrose Place ended with Amanda marrying Dr. Peter Burns played by her current boyfriend Jack Wagner.  Hopefully he will get an invite to return too because it would be awesome to see them back in action!  Everyone here at MelrosePlace.tv is rooting for Thomas Calabro to come back as Dr. Michael Mancini, the only character to be on the show from the first episode to the last and the cause of more marriages and last name changes than any other.

Mark Schwahn to Write New Melrose Pilot E-mail
Written by Scott

Well, it seems that the writer for the CW's One Tree Hill, Mark Schwahn has officially been chosen and hired to write the pilot episode for the resurrection of Melrose Place.

Since Schwahn has prior commitments to One Tree Hill, the production of the new Melrose has had to be delayed a bit but is still a go.

Schwahn is not expected to write for the series on a regular basis should it be picked up for a full season because of prior obligations to Warner Brothers for One Tree Hill.  It seems though that he has a two year overall deal with the CW though that starts in June 2009.
